HOW THIS WEBSITE CAME ABOUT
Picture
CHARLES SAUNDERS AS A POW, AND TODAY

I used to run a little specialist travel company, and I only got involved in things related to Stalag VIIIB/344 because a friend of mine, Charles Saunders (born in 1917) who was in that camp, asked me a few years ago if I could organise a trip to Lamsdorf. When I advertised it I got so many replies from people, that documenting Stalag VIIIB/344 became a separate activity from my business altogether. People wrote to me, not necessarily because they wanted to go on the trip, but because they had stories to tell about their experiences, or because they wanted to find someone they (or their father/grandfather) had known during the war.  I have a huge amount of material that I am gradually adding to the website. I am also in contact with three museums in Poland who have helped with information, and whom we have helped too.

Of course, lots of people did go on the trips - we have taken more than 100 people there now, including a lot of former POWs. Although I have now retired from the travel business, I hope that the trips will continue in the future.

I was in the Royal Air Force for seven years, before entering the teaching profession. Some twenty years later I had a complete change and went into the travel industry, first with Saga Holidays and then with my own company.
